An unordered list of short items

So here are random news snippets and thoughts I've had over the past few weeks. It's getting quite long! I am majorly neglecting this place.

  • It snowed a bit today! As someone who has not seen snow in a while (who lives in the South), it was very exciting. Sadly, the ground is too warm and it melted away.
  • I went to a Wizard Rock concert last night ( Read more... )

1. I love assembly. I need to improve my proficiency in the language. The actual instructions are the same for windows/linux/mac (for a given architecture) but the syntax is quite a bit different, along with which interrupts map to which OS functionality. We learned on MASM (8086) so at some point I'll need to learn the Linux syntax. The upshot being: w00t! assembly!

2. With respect to the web: I found this a really insightful read (my apologies if you've already seen it.) http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2008/03/17.html

1. I sadly enough do not have real assembly experience, since all we learned in our course is MIPS which is (as far as I know) very different from IA32. Do you have good resources for picking up IA32 assembly? (my book might have some stuff, I should read it ( ... )

Our teacher had his own text and notes that he had written for the course. They are generally pretty good, but I also needed other websites to help with some of the syntax/concepts. If you are actually interested in the material, here is his distance-ed section, complete with notes, assignments, and video lectures. (http://courses.ncsu.edu/csc234/lec/601/... )

Yes, I am interested, that's why I asked about it. Thanks for the link. I am not self-disciplined enough, probably, to learn it on my own but it's a good resource to have, and perhaps I'll get bored one day.

That class sounds more intense assembler-wise than ours--we did several assignments in assembler, but they were just graded for correctness and the majority of our course was probably topics other than assembler. See here for our course, in case you're interested.

With respect to browsers: I will say that the advent of firefox *has* forced IE to actually compete/update, which they've been doing over the past few years.
I definitely agree with you there. IE is not (as bad of a) browser anymore. I was just not expressing my sympathy for IE coders when (as linked in Joel's articles) they find they can't make anyone happy when they update their browser.

So I think one is left arguing which browser ( ... )

It was really nice to see you on Monday at the concert. Sorry didn't get to talk much but now I got a nice update on your life today right here in your LJ and I get another wizard rock band to look into! You know you and Selena are the only two people I know that get into Wizard Rock like I do but y'all seem to have the inside scoop on when and where the concerts are! You have to get me in the loop! Please?

It was very good to see you too! While I vaguely recognize the people there (as I mentioned on your LJ) seeing somebody we actually KNEW (that wasn't us) was a very pleasant surprise.

We totally do not have any inside scoop on Wizard Rock beyond the magical steps of being on the Camelot Treasures email list / various facebook groups (e.g. "Wizards of the Triangle", being Scott, the owner's friend).

Now, if it's more wizard rock music / bands / general info you want (how experienced are you with wrock? perhaps you should be teaching me?) :), I got most of my music from Selena (including a mix which started it all off). I can point you in the direction of some of our favorite bands, if you wish (they're all on myspace with songs freely available). We (us three) could definitely get together and wizard-rock out / share music. :)
