I want to live off campus soo bad right now. It's not that I really want to escape the dorms, but I just really would rather live off campus. Sure there are some annoying people around here and the food is pretty awful, but I do like my friends around here. However, the price of living in the dorms, for me at least, is around $7500 (room and board), so for 8 months, that translates into about $940/mo. That's pretty steep, when you think about it.
Now, Christopher and I have been wanting to get an apartment together for a little while now, and we were originally looking at getting an apartment on campus in SSV south, however, those run around $8700, which is even more than I'm paying for my room with food. So I have basically kicked that idea out the door. However...
Just for the fun of it, I was searching on Craigslist tonight for apartments in Bridgeport (the neighborhood just across the freeway) and I stumbled across the best apartment for us ever, it's a 4 bedroom apartment, and well... here are the details:

Move-In Special: 1st Month $800
1 year Standard Chicago Lease
$1050 11months [utilities not included]
yes -- cats are OK - purrr
yes -- dogs are OK - wooof
So, taking the $1050/mo, divided among 4 people, that's only around $260/mo, plus about $100/mo each person for utilities and food, that's still only $360/mo, that's almost a third of what I'm paying currently! Granted I have to pay for summer months and winter, but this also give freedom. No restrictions on when I can stay there. I could stay in Chicago over winter break or part of winter break, or even summer break. No RAs, no floor or building policies. No guest policies. Can have a coed apartment. And we can even have kitties! I've already talked with Chris about this, and we'd probably adopt at least one kitten, maybe even two. It would be completely awesome.
Paying less and having more freedom and more room to do what you want, that's what I love about it. And this apartment here looks ideal for us. Even paying for an entire year, at $360/mo.. well... that's still less than 8 months of room and board here in the dorms about $3200 less!
Well... anyways, I think I'll get going now and try to get a life update up tomorrow.
