Catastrophic hard drive failure? Maybe...

So, an update on my computer situation. I was able to use my computer for about 5 minutes or so, when I repaired things and it actually worked, then it just failed again. So tonight, after installing OS X on my external hard drive so I could run off that instead of having to come down here to the basement computers to use the internet (check mail, etc.) the whirring noise got quite loud. I had someone else come in and he said "sounds like a head crashed," and I think I agree, but I was just in denial. So right now I'm backing up some stuff on my external hard drive to that same friend's computer so as to be able to fit my hard drive contents onto my external, if I can even recover them, if not, I skip to the next step, where I go to the Apple Store, and if I can't save my stuff, I'll bring my external so they can help me save my stuff, after seeing if it is indeed a hard drive failure and a head crashed. Then I'll have to buy a new hard drive for it, and that'll run about $150, which I think should be covered by my paycheck from TechNews (which the Bursar's office has still yet to give us).

In short, I might not be on much in the next few days while I get my computer probem sorted out. If I end up having to replace my hard drive, I'll be doing it myself, as my compy is already out of warranty, so there's nothing to void by opening it up and replacing it. But I'll have to wait a few days for the hard drive to arrive, so I'm hoping to be up and running by the middle of the week, end of the week at the latest.
