Starting My Career

This was my first week of work for my biotech job. This week mostly consisted of training which was done via computer programs and in lab observation and practice. Today I actually started performing lab procedures which was a nice change to just watching people. Overall, I think I'm going to enjoy working for the company. Everyone seems really nice and the facilities are top notch in regards to technology, software, and amenities. The labs at Western are primitive compared to the labs at Rosetta. The endless amounts of machines and supplies makes working in the lab so much simpler and time efficient. To be honest, it is more so the small things that makes my days enjoyable at the work place. I love the break room which has a plethora of free beverages and appliances. The parking garage below the building makes for easy parking. As well, I have an access card which makes me feel VIP when I use it. This is your ordinary card that you swipe to enter restricted places, you simply put the card near a sensor. Pretty high tech stuff.

In the past, I have stated that my dream job would require me to wear a lab coat and I would have my own office. I'm about 2/3 the way to accomplishing that with this job. I wear a lab coat for most of the day and I even have a cubicle complete with my own computer. I have to share the cubicle with another guy but that is understandable since it seems really big. My next stop will be to have the corner office overlooking downtown Seattle and Lake Union. =)

The biggest downfall to working at Rosetta is that I have to commute from Tacoma. The drive is terrible. I really want to live in Seattle but I don't know if I can afford to. I set a price in the range of $600-$800 but I now realize that is probably not realistic. I just know that I need to find a place lest the commute will drive me insane.
