I’ve been thinking for a couple of weeks now about getting back on my bike and cycling into work again, especially since we’ve had a few nice warm days lately, and so this morning, buoyed with enthusiasm and excitement I decided to do it.
Big. Mistake.
My enthusiasm lasted around 4 seconds as I wobbled down the road seemingly haven forgotten everything about balance, coordination and how to actually, you know, *ride* a bike. “Where’s the throttle? Where are the wingmirrors?”
After about 11 seconds a searing, burning sensation swept through my lungs and my heart felt as if it was about to burst through my rib-cage. Gasping for breath I struggled on, up Beach Lane and towards Reading. Ten minutes later I had to stop to throw up.
Eventually I made it into work where, with my head spinning and to a background of supportive comments from my work colleagues, I collapsed into my chair taking a good 20 minutes before I was able to stand up again to go and get changed.
I’m seriously not sure quite how I’m going to get home tonight - if I get back on the bike again I fear it may well be in the back of an ambulance.
How on earth did I manage to complete the London to Brighton last year???!
