Day 4: How did you learn how to knit?
Oh, LOL. I taught myself, natch.
A few years back, I started out with a kit very similar to
caitir_eadoin's - except I had the stone-cold foxxxxy
1980s version of the book. Woo!
...At any rate, that didn't go very well. The kit had long needles in it, and I was so used to crochet hooks... The needles felt completely wrong in my hands, and I couldn't get into the rhythm of English knitting, so I said, "Fuck it," and set the kit aside.
About 2 years ago, a former acquaintance offered to make me a pair of socks when she saw how fascinated I was with the pair she was knitting in honor of a melon-headed boy and his big-eyed friend. I watched her for a while, and thought, "Man, I wish I could do that..." So, in late 2009, I was putzing around Wally World after one of my pre-surgical appointments, and saw that they had yet another "teach yourself to knit" kit, with shorter needles.
"Huh," sez I. "Those needles are about as long as crochet hooks. I wonder..." So, I bought it. And though the needle length was more comfortable, I still had issues with English knitting... Until I was bitching to said former acquaintance about wishing there was a way to knit with the yarn in my left hand, and she mentioned Continental knitting.
*facepalm*
Since then I've been knitting away merrily.
courts helped me with casting on and working dishcloths, Dawn at my LYS showed me how to purl (and that you don't have to listen to the designer's suggestions for needle sizes!), and
caitir_eadoin showed me how to join in the round for circular knitting. That - and a few good books! - are all I really needed to get where I'm at.
