Theatre!! Opera!!
I know it's been forever since I've posted, but I had to share....
Spent a few days in NY going to the opera w/my sister and my dear friend known to some of you as Cinel Durant, and her incredible mom. Saw "Boheme" and "Butterfly". The Zeffirelli "Boheme" was very enjoyable, with terrific performances by Hibla Gerzmava (Mimi) and especially Suzanna Phillips (Muzetta). Rudolfo (Dimitri Pittas) was good in the ensemble and duets, but frequently noticeably sharp in his arias, which made me cringe. But it was the Minghella production of "Madama Butterfly" that was the stunner. All the roles were sung well, but Liping Zhang brought vocal beauty and emotional depth to one of operas more challenging roles. The production itself was unique and marvelous, and I left the Met afloat on cathartic tears. When opera is good, it is the epitome of great theatre!
