It's about the young girl with cerebral palsy who just wanted to see a movie at her local theater...

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it... I have bones to pick with President Obama. I do. I believe in Bill Maher's great line, "remember, he's your President, not your boyfriend."... because it's true. I adore the man, I have great faith in him, but I can adore him and have faith in him without thinking that he farts magic pixie dust and ( Read more... )

I know that feeling well -- the feeling of NEVER being able to relax in public. I'm harassed on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, Obama's health care plan seems to be working against people like me. He seems to really buy into the idea that fatties and type 2s are to blame for their issues. It scares me to death.

grr... it gets me how many public places 'interpret' the ADA. how much i've fought against the wind and being told 'no' or 'it can't be done' because abc/xyz re accessible housing, or how disabled access, if it *is* available, often means the longer route.

i hope that some change, however small, does come about soon. unwittingly reinforcing ablist stereotypes is not cool, but hopefully there will be some substance to better legislation here in the US soon with obama's support. i'm on the fence about him and never thought he was a savior for our ills, and rather disturbed about his slowness to correct the trampling of the constitution...

anyway thanks again for sharing and your articulate thoughts that sound similar to the ones bouncing in my head but never seem to get transferred to the comp screen or page. *hugs*

oh, and the harassment.... an extreme example: one time in the past month, while in a hospital for 45 minutes, i was laughed/jeered at, derided or ignored for service 4 times (and that's just by staff).

it's frustratingly sad, but i willfully just ignore the public stares or laughter unless it affects my human rights. i hold my head high, and cease to react partly because i don't have the energy and pick my battles carefully now. before, i got livid and made snarky comments. now, i feel like these people are not even worth a response, as pathetic as they are.

this has been happening to us and i don't know how to legislate ignorance and prejudice out of existence. it's so frustrating!!!

I don't remember how I found you here, but your entries seem really interesting. Would it be alright if I were to add you? :B

This is a little off topic, but I saw your post in Little Details about service dogs, thought it was interesting (and wanted to hear more about your dogs), clicked over to your LJ, and like reading what you have to say so I've added you. If this is an issue, please let me know and I'll de-friend you.
