The
recent arrests of Hmong counterrevolutionaries for fomenting a rebellion against the socialist Laotian government caused me to ponder how we treated similar groups in the past. When the Communist Fidel Castro took over Cuba, we welcomed those fleeing his tyranny and assisted those Cubano counterrevolutionaries in attempting to retake the island - although JFK's decision not to allow the use of naval aircraft at the Bay of Pigs destroyed that effort. When the socialist Sandinista regime took over Nicaragua, we supported the Contras, and that counterrevolution allowed democracy to return to Nicaragua. On principle, we used to stand up for and assist counterrevolutionaries in stopping Communism and socialism from enslaving people. I guess we just don't care about those principles of freedom and democracy anymore, unless they're in the Mid-East and we have to send our soldiers to do the work.
