Yeah, so I got tired of looking at that Family Circus comic each time I pulled up my blog. Haven't felt like writing or ranting much lately. This isn't for lack of material, though... I think it's just a matter of overload and a general inability to muster the gumption to work up a good froth over it.
Which brings me to
this:
"The rich have traditionally passed their wealth on to their children. But an increasing number of multimillionaires are choosing not to. The reason? They want their offspring to fend for themselves - and not to turn into spoiled heirs and heiresses."
Or, as I call it, The Paris Hilton Effect.
If the media at large is to be believed, we seem to have spawned an entire generation of largely worthless, self absorbed, self important, thoughtless tramps that are owed everything by the world. There seems to be an abundance of people around that are famous for being famous(or, increasingly, infamous), or being rich, not for actually doing anything productive or giving anything of value to society. This isn't limited to the women... I'm sure there are an equal number of worthless of guys (like the winner featured in
this little video clip), and it extends across socio-economic strata... it just "feels" like we have an overabundance of little shits that expect a whole lot of everything for a bunch of nothing. I think the rich get outed more because they're, well, rich and more visible. And more fun to tear down.
So good on these folks that are forcing their kids to go out and make something of themselves. People who haven't had to do without rarely appreciate what they have. I think lots of people, once they get something, forget what it was like to have nothing... and take it for granted as well. Maybe if everyone just appreciated what they have while they've got it... things would be just a bit better in the world.
Or not, what the fuck do I know? I'm just some schlub with a blogging account. ;)
