Both are giant. Huge amounts of people, huge facilities, huge stars.
The big differences I felt seemed be come from the main difference: ComiCon is commercial where DragonCon is fan run.
ComiCon was better organized, more controlled. Fans had to have their questions screened before asking questions of a panelist. Lines to get into events were very well marked and organized. The registration line moved faster because there was an army of people processing registration.
DragonCon was about the fans, about 1/4 of people were in some sort of costume (as opposed to say 1/25 at CC). As CG pointed out, all the big fandoms were represented by interest, and were in now way dictated by what show was coming out next year.
Dragoncon has three impressive dealers rooms. Some dealers I'm used to, some i'm not. ComiCon doesn't really have one at all, it's an 'exhibition hall' and it's much more about the networks promoting an upcoming series or movie. There aren't really any vendors, there are a few indie comics on the sidelines.
Dragoncon is like the fan run tyo're used to on a huge huge scale. ComiCon is like a marketing machine tried to recreate a con.
