burning down your house

I read this: Emo: Where The Girls Aren'tSometimes I think punk rock as an entity has more to offer than its human inhabitants can realize. The potential is there. The courage and creative thinking it demands is huge. It's part of the paradox of being forever young: you think you know everything, but you may or may not be able to really look ( Read more... )

You don't know me, but I've seen you around and have taken the liberty of adding you to the ol' friends list because I like your brain. Hope you don't mind. :)

Just wanted to say that I loved this entry, but I felt a bit of an introduction was in order, too.

Hi - I'm here 'cause happypea linked to you. Just wanted to say that this was really good. I find that it's difficult to explain why things that are supposedly "normal" can actually be quite limiting or even damaging, but you made it look easy. Very cool.

"and no, female-fronted is not enough"

FWIW, instrumentalists in all sorts of rock and pop bands tend to be male. This appears to be especially true for drummers and bass players. I'm not saying it's OK, just that it's not specific to punk rock. When I go to Comfest, everywhere I look there seems to be a band with a female singer (who may or may not have a guitar in her hand) and all male instrumentalists.

Oh, I know. I just spend the bulk of my time in the punk rock universe. The punk rock universe has this particular identity that says "Everyone's welcome, anyone can make their voice heard, DIY, etc." And then they turn around and repeat the same stuff you see in the mainstream with regards to gender division.
