Do I need stronger gloves? I figured to wear two pairs, handle the carcass as gingerly as possible, and wash my hands really well after. As it is, any dishrag that I use to wipe up the mouse shit goes directly into the laundry. And boy is there a lot of shit. The landlord had the exterminator come on Nov. 2, but I am not really feeling the success.
Also, what is the best way to dispose of the bodies?
i think your vinyl gloves will be fine, just throw them out right away, and wash your hands after. What I often do is, while holding the mouse in my gloved hand, peel the glove off and over, so that the mouse is then in a little baggie (the glove). Then you can tie the glove shut and throw it out.
What did the exterminator actually do when he visited?
I was not home at the time, but he apparently set traps and seeded the area with poison. We saw no evidence of this, and we assumed it was hidden in places we could not reach. My landlord was with him, I think, and the landlord is excellent and attentive so I am inclined to trust him. But mouse shit is mouse shit.
So far, the traps are empty. I'm sure the mice think this is very funny.
There are a few different ways to legally set out poison for mice, all of them keep the poison away from people. The poisons most exterminators use are in low enough doses that a human could eat a bit of it without feeling too bad.
The mice will take 3-5 days to start dying. Some of them probably stagger into the traps, some (alas) will die in the walls and stink up the joint for a couple days.
