8x01 [At Ground Level]

[The paramedics, Eva, Fran and Diego, are at the reception desk with Teresita and Esther]

Diego: Well, are we going or what?
Fran: Pfft, you are worse than my father when we went on a holiday. You're boring!
Eva: Leave the poor boy alone, please!
Diego: Hey, is the new nurse gorgeous?
Esther: Let's shut up, shut up!

[The paramedics leave]

Maca: [off camera] Hey, pass me that wheelchair!
Esther: [a for-god's-sakes-learn-some-manners look on her face] Yes, of course.
[Esther brings the wheelchair and they help a woman to sit]
Maca: Thanks. She said that that she was sick and fell because of it. It seems like she has a low blood pressure. It could be a vasovagal [something to do with blood vessels] but we should do an examination and a run some tests, just in case it's not. Anyway, we should check her glucose level too, mmm?
Esther: Okay. Are you together?
Maca: No, I came to work. Today's my first day.
Esther: Ah, come here for a moment.
[They take a few steps from the woman. Esther's slightly stroppy]
Esther: I was waiting for you and listen, as I don't want to start off on the wrong foot, it'd be better that I say to let go of this exhibition and leave it for the doctor who's going to see her, ok? [Maca wants to say something but Esther doesn't give her a chance] Now, look for Elisa, change your clothes and then ask for me. I am Esther.
Maca: Esther, look...
Esther: No, sorry, we don't have all day.

[Maca, with an amused look on her face, leaves. Rusti arrives.]

Esther: Rusti, can you help me?
Rusti: Yes, of course. [Looking after Maca] Who was she?
Esther: She? The new nurse. She's a smartypants, I think.
Rusti: If you can't stand her, it'll always be like that.

[walking along a corridor]

Aimé: Maca, I'm glad and I thank you for incorporating without holidays.
Maca: Don't think I'm going to write you off that... I'm thinking of taking a month off during the summer...
Aimé: A whole month? It's such a long time that I don't know what it is. Look, I want you to meet Laura, she's one of ours residents. [to Laura] Laura, let me introduce you to Macarena Fernández, a pediatrician.
Laura: [shaking hands with Maca] Pleased to meet you.
Maca: Likewise. Call me Maca.
Laura: Great.
Aimé: [to Laura] Hey, could you deal with the woman in number four? [to Maca.] Do you see, Maca? This is a world of numbers. [Maca laughs] You'll get used to this.
Laura: What's wrong with that woman?
Aimé: A "pitera".
Laura: A what?
Aimé: According to Rusti, "pitera" is a bump that bleeds. You know, it's a matter of his village. [Maca laughs]
Laura: Wow. [laughs] So... Do we accept "pitera" as a new medical term? If you want, I can write it in my medical report.
Aimé: Well, write it however you want, but you will sign it. [laughs] If you have a problem, just call me, okay?
Laura: Okay. Listen, I need to talk to you about something... Do you have a minute?
Aimé: Yeah, once I've shown Maca the doctors lounge. [to Maca] Come on.
Maca: [to Laura] See you.
Laura: See you.

[Esther's in the pharmacy. Elisa comes]

Elisa: Have you heard about the new nurse?
Esther: I already met her. She's a smartypants...!
Elisa: But... How could you've met her if she isn't coming?
Esther: I saw her. She came a while ago!
Elisa: No, she didn't! She was called last night, some quiz show, a reality show. She's going to be on a ship, like the ones of Columbus, for three months starting next Monday. She renounced the post.
Esther: So, who was the girl I met?
Elisa: No idea. Listen, what will they do with the contestants once they're eliminated? Throw them overboard?

[Elisa leaves the room and Esther looks really concerned. As she leaves, she bumps into Maca who steps out of the elevator]

Esther: Uh, hi!
Maca: If you're going to tell me off again, I'll go back upstairs.
Esther: Uhh... I'm sorry, I think I made a mistake... I know that you aren't the new nurse.
Maca: I'm a doctor.
Esther: Uh... [smiling] I'm Esther.
Maca: [in a rude way] Okay. Can you tell me where can I find a white coat?
Esther: Uhh... Yeah, of course...doctor. Come with me...yeah...

[Maca walks off and Esther, looking very ashamed, follows]

[Maca is flipping through her papers, probably looking for a report or a test]

Laura: But when did you ask for it?
Maca: An hour ago.
Laura: Ah, it must be there, in that basket. [pointing to something off screen] Here you will only find those from the early morning.
[Maca goes to the other basket to search for it]
Laura: Is it there?
Maca: Yes, thanks. I was wondering how long it'd take to get it. I asked for it as urgent.
Laura: Look, one trick: if you want something really fast, ask Teresa. Because if she's having a good day, she is fast like a lightning.
Maca: And there's no way to know if she has a good one?
Elisa: I'm sorry to interrupt. [to Maca] But I have to talk to you. We haven't been introduced yet, I'm Elisa, the chief nurse.
Maca: Nice to meet you.
Laura: [to Maca] Well, I will continue this with you later.
Maca: Okay. [Laura leaves] You were saying?
Elisa: There is a child in the waiting area that is behaving strangely. He came with his grandma who's been taken here because of a cut in her hand. He might've caused it.
Maca: Do you think he could be ill?
Elisa: He's taking medication, but... I don't know anything else. I don't know, it's... a feeling. Could you have a look? He's with his mother now. His name is Alberto and hers is Amelia.
Maca: Great, let's go and tell me who they are.

[Maca and Elisa are talking in the waiting room with Roberto and Amelia]

Maca: Excuse me, would you like to go to the cafeteria? It's a lot more comfortable there.
Roberto: I want to paint!
[Maca looks at Elisa]
Elisa: Esther!
Esther: [comes over] Tell me.
[Elisa points to Maca]
Maca: Esther, is there a place where he can paint?
Esther: In the nurses room, there are some markers for the shift board.
Maca: Why don't you take Roberto and give him the markers so he can draw?
Esther: Ok.

[Vilches and Maca leave the operating room with a boy. His father, who was at the entrance, starts yelling when he sees his son]

Maca: Who put the patient at the entrance of the room?! ESTHER!
Esther: Yes?
Maca: Does it seem logical to put the father at the entrance of the operating room where we're operating on his son?
Esther: No, I don't know who...
Maca: I didn't ask you who, Esther. Does it seem logical?!
Esther: Hey, I can't be everywhere, eh? At least nothing happened.
Maca: And if something had happened?

[Maca leaves and Esther stands still in disbelief. Aimé walks up to her]

Esther: What's her problem with me?
Aimé: What a character, huh?
Esther: Ha!

[at reception]

Maca: Teresa, I need some reports of a boy, Roberto Ramos. From psychiatric.
Teresa: It might take a while.
Maca: Whatever, ask for them. Though, if you have a way of getting them sooner...
Teresa: Whatever happens depends on what kind of a day they're having up there.
Maca: Let's hope we're lucky and they're having a good one, mmm? [she smiles.

[As she leaves, Esther walks up to her]

Esther: Hello!
Maca: What is it?
Esther: It's just that... Well, we got off to a bad start.
Maca: You fought with me the second I arrived.
Esther: Yeah, you fought with me too.
Maca: [fake laugh] Yeah? You thought that was a fight? I don't think so. I simply told you what I wanted you to do, nothing more.
Esther: Yeah. I've been working here for years. I know how to get things done.
Maca: It's nothing. I'm sure we understand each other. When I ask you to do things, you do them. It's easy.
[Maca leaves and Esther looks after her with a pissed off look]
Teresa: It doesn't seem like you two will be getting along, huh?
[Esther shakes her head as a 'no']

[In the hallway]

Esther: No, I was in the wrong. When she arrived, I thought she was the new nurse, and that she was giving me orders.
Elisa: [laughs] But it was done with grace.
Esther: That Maca is a bit of a bitch!
Elisa: Have you tried talking to her and apologizing?
Esther: Twice, Elisa, and she hasn't accepted it!
Elisa: Don't worry. I'm sure that in two weeks you guys will be best friends.
Esther: Yeah. [shakes her head]
Elisa: Doesn't the cooking class start today?
Esther: Yeah, when I get off work.
Elisa: Do you know if you'll know anyone there?
Esther: No, I don't think anyone from ER is going. [sees that Maca is coming] She's coming, she's coming.
[Maca arrives]
Elisa: Have you talked to Vilches?
Maca: Talked? I think it was more like barking.
Elisa: [laughs] That's the best you'll get. He never hides.
Maca: When you can, can you get me the number of the grandmother?
Elisa: Mmh mmh.
Maca: I'm going to see if I can call her.
Esther: I'm going.

[Maca is waiting outside of the cooking class, looking bored, when Esther walks up]

Maca: What a coincidence...
Esther: Are you taking the class too?
Maca: Yeah. I saw the paper on a desk and I signed up. Since I don't know anyone in Madrid...
Esther: Yeah...
[The two of them are standing awkwardly and sneaking looks when the chef opens the door and gestures for the people to enter. The two of them are about to head in when Maca turns to Esther and puts on a pleasant face]
Maca: [with a light tone] I have no idea how to cook...
Esther: [laughing] Me neither...
