Morning Melancholy

May 12, 2014 09:17

Today has been a typical Monday morning for me so far. I got up and got ready for the day, and Nomi and I commuted to our offices together by train. We said goodbye to the kids in the usual way, such as waving to them at the window, before their babysitter took over to get them to school.

However, as I read the New York Times on the train this morning, the articles in the main section inculcated in me a sense of melancholy. Now, it's true that often the reported news is bad news, since that makes it newsworthy, but today's newspaper just seemed filled with article after article of generally not good stuff. I had thought about writing about my reactions to the first article I read, but then I read a second, and a third...and it kind of got to me. I suppose I could link to some of them and discuss them, but what struck me by the time I got off the train was less the details of the news, and more the relentlessness of it.

Then, on my walk to my office building, the air was filled with the miasma of burning rubber and bad cigarettes. If I had been writing fiction, you couldn't have asked for a better metaphor and contrast with the bright, sunny, and quickly warming day.
