A Recommendation for everyone in Melbourne

Tonight at Theatreworks in St Kilda is the international premiere of [title of show]. [tos] is one of the funniest and most original musicals i've ever heard. It's filled with theatrical in-jokes and nods to other performers and writers but is still accessible to people who don't know what's currently on Broadway and is generally just awesome.

The show started off as a writing exercise for Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell who decided to submit a musical to a festival. When they got stuck for ideas they started writing a song about two guys writing a song and eventually the musical became a musical about two guys writing a musical where they would play fictionalised versions of themselves and they're friends Susan and Heidi would play themselves as well.

For me the two highlights are Die, Vampire, Die! and Nine People's Favourite Thing. In the first Susan sings about the things in your head that stop your creative side getting out and how to kill them. The second is about whether or not you should change to appeal to a greater audience with the chorus stating "I'd rather be 9 people's favourite thing then 100 people's 9th favourite thing".

The songs are gorgeous, the show is simple but lots of fun. It is literally 4 people singing and one guy playing a keyboard so it's not for people who want Wicked-style theatrics but it is awesome. And the highest ticket price is $44 so it's not too expensive either. sweet_adelheid and I will be going next Saturday night, hopefully it lives up to the US version.
