There it was again. That feeling. The feeling that makes my skin crawl and chills run up and down my spine. And that’s how I know you’re here. You always give me that feeling when I see you. And I have to wonder:

Do you know you have this amazing effect on me?

I turn around and, sure enough, there you are. I see that look in your eyes; it’s the one you always have:

Cool, icy, and overly-confident.

“Hello, Aoi.” You say it all in one breath like you’ve been running all day. If it wasn’t for the fact that there wasn’t a sheen of sweat covering your forehead, I would have believed it. Why do you always greet me like that?

I nod, quickly turning back to my business. If there’s anything I’ve learned from our strange, almost nonexistent relationship, it’s that you can’t stand to have my attention on anything other than you.

“Get me the same as always.” You sound as if I don’t know you, as if challenging me to get you something different.

I hum in response, pouring the alcohol into a glass. I top it off and place it in front of you.

“So, Jin, how’s work?” I ask casually. What kind of bartender doesn’t engage in the casual everyday talk?

You swirl your glass around, then look up in my eyes. And then you do something I’ve never seen you do before:

You shrug.

“Same as always, I guess.” And then you do it again. I swear if you shrug one more time I’m kicking you out. “Ray and San had an interesting conversation today. That’s about it.”

“Oh? What about?”

You swat your hand at me. “It was nothing.”

“You said interesting.” I see your lips twitch, denying the smile begging to come forth. You know what a curious person I am. You enjoy seeing me desperate, don’t you?

“I mean it was interesting to me.” You set your down with a thud. “And nothing to you.”

That’s a bit cold, isn’t it? “And why was it interesting to you? And who says it wouldn’t be interesting to me?” A smirk appears on my lips.

You sigh heavily and give me a look. I’ve been around you long enough to realize when you’re just trying to get me to think I’m being annoying. And I figure you realize that it won’t work like it used to. Still worth a try though, right?

“They were”-you rub your face-“talking about”-you lower your eyes to the amber liquid in front of you-“love.”

I raise an eyebrow, intrigued. You really had to strain to get that word out. “Oh? See you were wrong. I’m interested in love.” I quickly turn around and stifle a laugh. The way your eyes widened when I said that; priceless.

You fidget with your sleeve. What’s there to be nervous about?

“It was... more specific than just love in general,” you mumble.

“How specific?” I say as I turn around once more to face you, a grin plastered on my face.

What’s with you today? You’re bent out of shape; now you won’t even look at me in the eyes. What do you not want me to know?

“Do you love someone, Jin?” I lean over the counter and breathe lowly into your ear, gently nipping at the ear lobe.

You tense, bringing your hands up to my chest. Honestly, I thought you were going to use as much force as you could to push me back, but no, you clear your mind enough to just nudge your fingertips against my thin shirt. I didn’t know you cared when it came to hurting me.

I give in to your request though. I back up to my side again. “You’re cute when you blush,” I state simply. I don’t bother hiding my laughter when the pink darkens.

“Look, I’ll see you tomorrow, Aoi.” I cease my laughing when you get up.

“You didn’t tell me about that conversation though!” My hands slam onto the counter. Overreacting to the things you say and do is nothing foreign to me. It might be the only thing that gets me stuck in your mind.

With a wave of your hand, you head out the door. Not so much as ‘good bye’ or ‘have a nice day’. Just a ‘I’ll see you tomorrow’. Well, I’ll be damned if I don’t find out what was in that conversation tonight.
