I went to a forum on public speaking yesterday from 1-4pm.  Not knowing what to expect, I was glad it was actually really interesting.  And weirdly enough, it also made me keep thinking of KHR of all things.  We were discussing pronunciation and inflection and were told to think of vowels as "a river of emotion and consonants are it's banks."   Cheesy as hell?  Yes, but also true.  The more emotion you want to convey, the more you draw on vowel sounds.  Someone who is more distant or reserved speaks with words that are more clipped.  First thing that popped in my mind when  I heard this was "VOOOOIII."  Squalo is not a guy constrained by his consonants - at all.  I noticed but never fully realized the extent to which that phrase and the way that he draws out words speaks to his character.  He's completely in touch with certain emotions and isn't afraid to express them.  The vowel thing comes out when he's angry, frustrated, excited or boasting, all the emotions he's most identified with.  He's much more reserved in more personal instances like when he was discussing Xanxus' history in the Varia arc or around the campfire after training with Yamamoto TYL, and in those instances his vowels are normal in length.

We were also asked to do a little reading in front of everyone so the people running the program could tell us what we should work on.  Normally, I will read through whatever I'm presenting to get a good feel for what it is, but we weren't given that opporutnity.  I made the classic, amateur blunder at the podium, and I still can't believe that I did it.  I tripped over a word, apologized, and started over.  The second I did that I was mentally shaking my head because I knew better.  So, of course, that lead into the Never Correct Yourself; Never Apologize lesson.  I was told not to stand with one hand behind my back and to read again.  When I finished, one of the ladies participating commented, "We all love Kitt and know her as soft and giggly.  But when you made those corrections - that was a strong woman up there.  That was a stong presentation.  Your phrasing was excellent."  It was said with loving intention, it was a compliment, but a little part of me just wanted to die at the idea of being "giggly."  I love to laugh; I laugh often.  I'm also told I am a very a smiley person.   It's who I am, but now I'm hoping that it doesn't make me look vapid....  Anyway, as I was walking back to my seat I was reflecting on that and decided it just makes me more of a Yamamoto than a Squalo.  Which, as Ankari has pointed out, is kinda funny considering who I RP :)
