Seattle diners-out: If you're curious about the economics of "25 for $25", don't miss
today's article in the Seattle Times. Opinions of restaurant owners vary widely: "For us, it's fantastic," says John Sillers, co-owner, with his wife, Kendell, of Market Street Grill. versus Assiaggio's owner complaining that the average check amount drops to half, workload doubles, he has to hire extra personnel, and his regulars are squeezed out of a table.
Does the promotion work to attract new customers? Well..."The original idea behind the promotion," says Golmarvi, "was that
customers will come in and say, 'It's so inexpensive, let's order a bottle of wine!,' but that didn't happen." Instead, "customers came in and said, 'This is my first time in! This was great! I'll see you in November.' People are out for a deal, and I don't blame them."
To those of us who like to dine out in the lull created by major sporting events, perhaps more interesting is the comment that 25-4-$25 creates a noticable drop in traffic at non-perticipating restaurants. Hmmmmm. Iiiiiiinnntersting.
