One of the responses an author received back from Amazon was this:
"In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude “adult” material from appearing in some searches and bestseller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature."
In essence, de-ranking means these books are going to be excluded from eligibility to be on the best seller lists. You might have a best-selling book that may not have a sex scene in it, but it has be been put into a "gay" category, and that means Amazon will not allow it in their rankings.
As an example, go to Amazon, leave it to search all departments and search for Wild Raspberries. The book by that title is at #7, but only in a Kindle edition. It shows a ranking of #33,150 in the Kindle store. If you click through the Kindle page to the paperback edition's listing, there is no sales ranking given. The author is janedavitt.
Personally, I usually limit to books first anyway, but after a time, even that might not help. If I were browsing for bestsellers, they're simply not going to show up, once Amazon removes them from being ranked at all. You could have a gay erotica book selling more copies than Twilight and it won't make any difference. They've been "disappeared" from the lists, even though they are still there.
