Valjean sat up quickly, startled. "What?" he muttered, running a hand over his face and yawning.

[m_the_inspector]

From behind his back, Javrt produced out a small box wrapped in newspaper. "It's Saturday, Monsieur. Your birthday," he said quietly, offering the gift.

Right one.

"You shouldn't have..." Valjean mumbled. "It's not important." Still, he took the box and unwrapped it. "Oh my," he breathed.

[m_the_inspector]

"I know enough tradition to..." Javert does not finish the sentence; Valjean's eyes are fixed in an unreadable expression. Better not to speak and simply let things work themselves out. If he resents the implications, at least he'll be enough of a gentleman to let you stay.

After a long moment, Valjean stares at Javert. "You...you really mean this?" he whispers hoarsely.

(Er, I'm switching back to present tense because your comment is in it, OK?)

[m_the_inspector]

"I asked Monsieur Maturin, and he informed me that two students are marrying at Notre Dame. That's much more public than I thought you would care for, and one church is the same as another to me." Javert looks at Valjean, trying to read his reaction. "That is, of course, if you agree."

"I..." Valjean swallows. "Yes. I will."

[m_the_inspector]

"I'll make the arrangements, then." Javert lets out a small sigh of relief. Yes, peridot was definately the right way to go.

[msieur_leblanc]

Valjean slips the ring onto his third finger and smiles. "It fits perfectly."

[m_the_inspector]

"Well, it ought to, after all the time it took to make a cast of your finger for the jewler," Javert remarks with deadpan seriousness.

[msieur_leblanc]

"Really!" Valjean exclaims in mock surprise. "However did you get a mould?"

[m_the_inspector]

"Obviously, you have no idea what I do when you're asleep." Javert sits down next to Valjean and waits for the implications to sink in.

Don't reply to other one!

"Oh?" Valjean raises an eyebrow. "And why don't I wake during your little investigations?"

[m_the_inspector]

"You forget how little noise I make." To prove his point, Javert reaches an arm up behind Valjean and grabs a pillow, and begins bludgeoning him with it.

[msieur_leblanc]

Although his reflexes aren't what they used to be, Valjean is quick enough to twist one of Javert's arms behind his back. "Now who's on top?" he whispers in his ear.

(Double meaning fully intended. XD)

"Not you," Javert grunts, and brings his other arm up for a sneak-attack.
