Sideways Question

Oh, the Stone!, I sighed, Oh why

Neither you nor I can fly?

Said the Stone, I can fly!
You could, too, if you would try!
Up you go and up and up,
Then go down and down and - BUMP!
We the Stones know it's fine,
We are flying all the time.

Yes the Stone, I said, I see,
But it wouldn't work for me.
Going sideways is alright.
Upwards? No, for all my might!
As for Bump and Crash, all that,
I'd be little more than dead. -
Oh the Stone, I sighed, Oh why
You can fly but I can't fly?

Said the Stone, You amaze me!
You are only being lazy!
If you cared half a pebble
You would make directions tremble!..
So the Stone took off and flew,
Black against the sky's bright hue,
Indignant like a thunder cloud.

Flying Stone!, I cried aloud.
Where?, they asked. I turned to show
But the soaring Stone was gone.
Just the sky, so deep and clear...
Shrugs and sniffs, and no-one's near.
Oh the Stone, I whispered, Why
I can fly but I can't fly?..
