I have a small part in a film entitled Churchill: the Hollywood Years that this week was expected to have a preview screening for the press and others in advance of its premiere in late September.
However, the film was pulled at the last minute by Peter Richardson, its writer/director, for re-editing as he was unhappy with the result. There were also some rumblings in certain quarters such as The Churchill Society about the film's premise.
Now as
The Times realised the film is meant as a spoof on Hollywood's tendency to re-write history for the screen.
In this case the makers of a film about Winston Churchill during WWII discover to their horror that Winston was old, fat and English and elect to re-write him as Lieutenant Winston Churchill of the US Marines. After single-handedly capturing the German Enigma machine, he arrives to save the British and in the process woos our Princess Elizabeth. Christian Slater plays Churchill and Neve Campbell plays Princess Elizabeth. My own role is as Eva Braun opposite Tony Sher's Adolph Hitler.
I confess to enjoying spoof and satirical comedy though it can be a fine line when seeking an international audience as to whether the jokes fall flat due to cultural differences.
Aside from this, I have been having a wonderful time attending events at the Edinburgh Festivals. It also gave me the opportunity to meet Jo Rowling again. She seemed delighted with the casting for the new film and we talked a little about Rita Skeeter. Like myself, she is a great admirer of Mike Newell's work.
