So recently the bassoon studio had mock professional auditions. They went the whole nine yards: we had a proctor and the whole process was screened and totally anonymous. The winner of the audition won the principal seat for either Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring or Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade in orchestra next semester.
The first round went alright. Not perfect by any means, but it was respectable. Three people, of which I was one, advanced to the final round. During the finals we had to play some of the really hard excerpts. They asked me to play the Beethoven 4 excerpt (for those of you who don't know, it's super super fast tonguing = really hard) a second time and I almost shit my pants. :(
Everything went alright, including the second Beethoven 4. I actually ended up winning the audition which was, and still sort of is, fairly surreal. I don't think it's really sunk in yet. I am, however, very excited about the Rite of Spring next semester. It's going to be tons of fun. It's my favorite excerpt, more or less. :)
