I just had a really intense classical music nerd moment.
I happened upon a techno version of Barber's Adagio for Strings. I've heard it before, but for some reason I got to thinking: In it's original presentation it's totally heartwrenching in the most amazing way. The techno re-mix makes it into a bacchanalian, somewhat joyous, certainly upbeat composition. I actually welled up thinking of how terribly it's been bastardized here.
I have no problem with borrowing somebody's notes (with due credit) in order to add a little something of your own. What I don't understand is plagiarizing somebody's work and making it into a totally different composition on the totally opposite end of the emotional spectrum.
Is that silly?
Perhaps I got upset because of all that I already wrote, but part of me feels genuinly bad for all the people that listen to techno re-mixes of these wonderful pieces that will never take the time to know and appreciate the original, un-tainted editions. Perhaps I got slightly weepy in response to their lack of comprehension.
Modern society doesn't have the patience for classical music. When is there time to listen to a Bruckner symphony unfold or to watch a whole opera in one sitting? Perhaps there's plenty of time for some of us, but for people who are used to five minute songs being the really long ones, they must feel overwhelmed by the idea of hour long symphonies. that sucks. It sucks for them, because they won't be able to appreciate all the music that we can, but it sucks for us as well, because they won't pay to come see us present that music.
