So, our President's Ball was this weekend. It's basically like prom, only they serve you food, there's a cash bar, and there's a live band rather than a DJ playing crappy songs you've never heard. Anyway, it was a good time in general. I definitely had a lot more fun than I expected to. In some ways, I think that just goes to show how much some people change between high school and college. I'm not referring to me, by the way. Mainly just that most of the people who make prom as crappy as it is are either not here or have matured enough to make this a completely different experience. I suppose maybe it could be better compared to a wedding reception or that type of thing, only without all the relatives and such.
In any case, we performed and it was good. I was in one of the three dances that our swing group did, and it went amazingly well. It was probably the least complicated of the three as far as choreography goes, but it was probably the most focused on style and expression. In any case, the crowd was a lot more into it than I would've expected going in. I don't really have any clue what the exact numbers were, but there were easily hundreds of people there watching, by far the biggest crowd I can ever remember performing anything for. But, like I said, it went really well. Definitely my best performance, and it seemed like the other people in the group did it just as well. In theory there may be some video of this, so if I ever get a hold of that, I'll share it.
Aside from that, the whole night was pretty fun. I danced more than I would've really expected to at something like this, mainly because it was the kind of atmosphere where there's no good reason to be self-conscious about that kind of thing. The people I was with even did some of the infamous circle things where people take turns going in the middle and showing off their best moves, and I took a couple shots at it. Admittedly, I had no moves to show off, but I managed to make some stuff up. By the end of the night, I was doing some pretty crazy things. Maybe it was the fact that I was exhausted and running totally on adrenaline, but something prompted me to try something where I did the splits, then kinda rolled over and spun around on my back, then jumped back up to my feet. Except I didn't quite make it to my feet, so I was a little bit disappointed. I think that was during the last song of the night, so I decided I'd give it another shot after the floor cleared off a little bit. So, I was there with one of my friends, assuming he was the only one paying attention, I gave it a shot and pulled it off. And then people started cheering. Like a lot of people. I can't really gauge how many it was, but it sounded like there were people all over who had been watching. And then some people yelled at me to do it again. And at this point, I didn't really have any desire to be the center of all that attention. It was never really my goal in the first place; I was mostly just interested in showing myself that I could do it. But, after a fair amount of prompting, I gave it another shot and it worked again. And again people cheered.
As much as it's not my style to try to get everyone's attention, I've gotta admit, it was kinda fun to be in the spotlight for a little bit.
