I think I'm in love...

With all of the wonderful LJ'ers that have allowed me to relive the gooey goodness of Lifeline. I've been reading reviews, rants and/or raves all day and enjoying every moment of it. Each time I read about the awesomeness of the Sparky swan song I tear up a little bit. Can someone please tell me why I get so caught up in fandom? No, seriously, can you tell me? Because people give me that look, you know the one, the look of "how can you cry over a character in a TV show?" or "you know these people aren't real, right?".

I tried to think about it; about the why of it all. The only thing I can come up with is that when you immerse yourself in a fandom, I mean really spend your time with it, the characters become family. Think about it, what do you do with your family? You spend time with them (weekly - often more - viewings of episodes), you keep their pictures close (icons, wallpapers, journal layouts, posters), you treasure items from them (autographs, memorabilia), you keep current on their lives, (the characters: fan fiction, - the actors: message boards, appreciation sites), you know what they're communicating without hearing a word, you know their past and plan their future, you smile when they're with you and cry when they leave you.

But what really sums it all up for me is an essay I quoted in my journal more than a year ago. The link to it is in this entry. I thought it was worth revisiting. If you follow the link and want to repost it, please also pay attention to the request of the author.

I think I'll head off to find more reviews and ficlets!
