All Washed Up and Nowhere to Go

"Why does this keep on happening to us?"

A few paces away Claude continued wringing out his socks. "We've never been stuck in the middle of a jungle before," he pointed out glibly as he shook out the sodden fabric.

"Guseva!" their commander barked up and Nikita nearly jumped out of her skin. She grumbled gently and looked down from her watch post on the three.

"Ay, Sir!" She touched her forehead in a solute.

"Don't Sir me! Get down right this second!" He ordered and stomped impatiently in the ground. She cursed gently, but obeyed none the less.
As soon as her feet hit the ground he was shouting in her face "You lost them! Women! Can't do anything right! Go tell the man to find them before they get eaten!" He swung on his heals and disappeared into the camp.

Nikita stared in confusion. Her tense shoulders slouched and she rubbed the commanders spit off her face. Then his words sunk in and her body went rigid with shock. Lost who exactly?

The sound of voices some meters away was enough to make Claude stop in his tracks. "We aren't alone," he murmured.

"Uh, that's obvious," Fran said. She grabbed the flashlight. "I think we should hail them."

"What if---"

"They aren't from our camp? Better them than being alone."

Claude sighed as he put his fingers to his mouth to make a whistling sound. Fran trained the flashlight towards the sound. "Hello?!" she shouted.

Nikita stared, and as words sunk in a sneer slowly twisted her face. Call the men, hu? Yeah, right. She had no idea who was lost, but she wasn't leaving them all alone to go and beg to someone else to save them. She swung her shotgun over her shoulder and headed off inside the forest at a brisk pace.

A dim light pierced the trees. It was coming from down the river. She smiled. It wasn't that far away. She was going to collect them and bring them back. Their commander could eat his words. After all what was the worst that could happen?

Claude froze at the sound of footsteps. "Boots," he mouthed. Most people in these parts went about barefoot, or in slippers.

"Could be the military," Fran said.

"Or rebels."

The duo looked at their bags. Their scalpels wouldn't defend them well enough in a fight.

Nikita stumbled towards the source of the light. It didn't take long or at least she hoped it didn't.

"Anyone there?" she asked when she neared. Nikita had to resist the desire to slap herself. What if it was hostile? That would go great. "Psss!" she hissed and took aim with her shotgun just in case.

Claude quickly trained the flashlight on a shape in the woods. "Yeah, someone's here. We've gotten into---" he began before Fran elbowed him.

"We're two doctors and we need to get back to our camp," Fran said, unwilling to divulge any more details.

Nikita screwed her eyes shut when light shone in her eyes.

"Turn off the flash light." She called out.

Claude moved the flashlight away from Nikita's face, such that it still lent a glow to the woods.

"Who are you?" he called, despite Fran's pinching his arm.

"Nicky" Nikita answered as she stepped in the small opening. She saw the two doctors huddled together. "Let's go. The commander is mad enough as it is." She made a move to head towards the camp. "Who are you?" She asked over her shoulder and a new thought dawned on her: What were two doctors doing alone in the forests during at night? And so away from the camp?

"The commander? Who are you working for?" Fran asked suspiciously.

Claude motioned for her to be quiet. "I'm Claude, and this is my fiancee Fran. We had to answer an emergency call but the bridges collapsed on our way back."

Nikita stopped in her tracks at the words. She turned around to take a better look at them. They were wet and dirty and have definitely been walking for awhile. She tried to remember the location of the nearest camp, and came up empty. If she actually thought about it she didn`t recognize their faces either. But that might just be her. Still the nagging suspicion that those weren`t the people she was supposed to rescue was slowly crawling along her back. "Pleasure to meet you Fran, Claude." she said finally "And the patient?" She added after a moment and lifted her shotgun.

Claude nodded politely, though he did not recognize Nikita either. "Hopefully the patient will do well," he replied.

"Of course he will. You got his appendix out in time," Fran said. "He tends to um, undervalue his work," she explained.

She definitely wasn't fazed by the sight of Nikita's weapon. "Not to be rude or anything, but are you working with someone?" she asked.

"Great." Nikita mumbled and ignored the question. There were more urgent matters. "Where are you camping?"

"Maybe a few kilometers from here. An hour by the road," Claude explained. "What about you?"

Nikita cringed. Those were definitely the wrong people. What was it about women and competency that the commander had said? Right. "Good luck with finding your camp." She added and turned to trace her steps back to the camp.

"Umm....do you happen to have any transportation of some sort?" Claude asked anxiously. "These woods really aren't safe at night, and we could use some help. Please?"
