Stars
"Pick one, any one of them."
Elise looked at her sister quizzically. "Will it really grant a wish?"
"Maybe. They're there all the time, not like wishing wells, wishbones or other things," Phyllis whispered so they wouldn't be heard chattering in the observatory.
The little girl looked up at the starry sky and pointed to the Pleiades. "There, what about that?"
"Looks nice. Now make a wish---but don't you dare tell!"
Elise shut her eyes and wished with all her might. Maybe it wouldn't work, but it didn't hurt to wish that her parents would somehow get back together.
Sundress
There were some things that Mark knew he did not want to say to Ida's face.
First was the fact that she still could not cook his favorite dish, sinigang, even if her life depended on it.
Second was that she actually snored louder than he did, even when she wasn't sick.
Third was that her mood swings were more terrifying than the storms that had nearly killed them both as teenagers.
And the last was that he thought she was beautiful as she was on this summer afternoon, sitting in her sundress with a hand over her pregnant belly.
Shades
"You never let go of those damned shades, did you?"
Carlos smirked at his former best friend. "They're of a classy make."
Emil shook his head. "Sinister."
"Straight out of those stupid books you liked to study."
"Downright deceitful."
The businessman laughed at the lawyer. "Look who's talking. Your profession isn't exactly the most honest one either."
"Well I try my best to run a different road," Emil said stiffly. He put the blue-tinted sunglasses on the desk. "Have a nice life, Carlos."
Carlos gritted his teeth, wishing that Emil had been his firm's lawyer instead of the opposition's.
Blanket
"The evidence is everywhere. The rumpled sheets, you walking out wearing only a blanket...."
"Yvette and I weren't doing anything, Emil!"
The younger debater smirked. "Right. She calls you Laurie, you two are always hanging out. You expect me to believe that you two aren't sleeping together?"
"Get your mind out of the gutter," the bespectacled student growled. "Yvette....she's different. What makes you think I was sleeping with her?"
"You live in the same house!"
"She's not the only one there, right?"
A step sounded in the kitchen. "You got that damned straight," Elle said, trying not to laugh.
Parade
"Haven't you noticed that his parade of dates has suddenly dried up?"
Marce hit Darren upside the head. "Will you stop trying to point out why Emil and I ought to get together? That's really not going to happen."
"Come on M. The reason he's not serially dating anymore is because he respects you too much," the actor replied.
"He can date whoever he pleases, and I won't mind."
"He wants you. He's saving himself for you."
Marce burst out laughing. "You make Emil sound so much like a girl."
"M, you're the one wearing the pants in your friendship."
Straw Hat
"Take that straw hat off, and look me in the eye."
Jace reluctantly did so, all the while never keeping his gaze off Raina. "What do you want me to tell you?"
"The truth," the distraught girl said. "What you owe me."
"I owe you nothing."
"You think you can just set me aside like that? After what we did, after what you're leaving me with?"
Jace's smile was cruel. "You can't prove it's mine."
"You're the only guy I've been with. Who else could it be?"
"Anyone."
Raina sighed. "Tell me that you love me."
He shook his head.
