Almost got into a car accident this morning.
True story... I'm driving down the highway in the left side of the road when someone tries to turn into my lane, almost sideswiping me. Instead of hitting the horn, I panic, and jerk the wheel to the side. Big mistake, as the car is doing about 65 miles an hour and it had been raining that morning. I turn into the shoulder and then, suddenly, I start to lose control of the car. I turn the wheel back the opposite direction (yes, I know, you're supposed to turn into a skid, but who the hell remembers to do that when it happens?) and I kid you not, I do a freaking 360 in the middle of the interstate!
Hell, I may have done it twice, I'm not sure... All I know is one minute I'm facing the way the road is supposed to go, next I'm facing the direction where oncoming traffic comes from. I came to stop and I was back (mostly) on the shoulder. Two things I was VERY lucky in: one it was early morning and there were no other cars next to me (and those behind were far enough that they avoided me with ease) and two, that there was a wide shoulder, otherwise I would have probably ended up in a ditch. (I think the shoulder was wide cause I'd just passed one of those U-Turns the put in the highway and then inexplicably put up signs telling you not to make U-Turns.)
So, I'm just sitting there, my car had stalled out upon coming to a stop. I start it up, and move a bit, straightening my car out (it was positioned horizontally across the road.) The whole time Roxette's "Joy Ride" was ironically playing over my mp3 player. It was still going as I sat there for a moment, trying to wrap my head around what just happened.
Suddenly, I started to laugh. I just really giddy... not really scared, I guess it hadn't hit me I should have been scared or how close I came to being road pizza, but still, I just started to laugh and think, "Wow, I cheated DEATH! HAHA!!" And other such stupid thoughts, "I can't be killed! HAHA!"
I guess at the moment I got an inkling of what those morons who do stupid risky things like bungy jumping or running with bulls feel when they survive some foolish stunts.
I paused, collecting myself. I noticed up ahead on the road a car had pulled over. Pretty sure it was whatever idiot tried to change lanes without looking first. I wasn't sure what to do at this point, should I drive up to him and deadpan, "Hey, next time look before you change lanes, okay?" Should I yell at him (or her, didn't get a look at the driver). Should I just say give 'em the thumbs up (or the one finger salute) and drive off?
I dunno, I was okay, and, my emotions still in a rush, I didn't feel like chewing anyone out right now. So, I just checked to make sure no one was coming, and then started back to work. I even arrived on time.
Told what happened to some of my co-workers and one guy just started laughing a bit and making a joke about not wanting to be on the road when I'm driving. I'm like, "Oh, thanks, Matt, I could have been killed this morning, and you're laughing at me." And he says, "Yeah, but you weren't. And you could have also had a big airplane engine fall out of the sky and into your room like in Donnie Darko, but that didn't happen either."
(Yes, he really said that.)
So, anyway, that my adventure for today..
