Post teeth extraction

May 02, 2010 16:22

Not sure I mentioned this, but I went to the dentist awhile back because of a toothache, found out I had an infection, got some antibiotics (which played hell on my intestine), and on Friday I went got two tooth extracted.  (Why do they say "extracted" these days instead of "pulled"?  Guess it sounds fancier.)

It was rather surreal, first the swabbed my teeth and inner jaw with this numbing stuff.  Now, the numbing stuff wasn't too bad except it tasted terrible and a bit of it got into my throat.  Because of this, my throat felt a bit constricted, which is not something I like (when you have asthma, anything that tightens your chest or throat is not comfortable).  It was especially bad when I laid down, so I had to sit back up for awhile.

At one point the doc came in and asked how I was doing.  I told him how my chin near where the numbing had occurred felt ITCHY, even though scratching the skin did absolutely nothing to relieve it.  He said I needed a bit more numbing, so I put some more of the foul tasting crap on my teeth.  That was another weird thing... ever had an itch that felt like it was BELOW your skin?

After a bit, the itching (and all other feeling) in that area went away.  The doc came in and filled a large syringe (and I do mean LARGE) syringe with some clear liquid.  The first two pokes weren't too bad, I could feel it going in, but only felt a bit of pain.  But then he hit one particular spot and it was like a jolt of electricity going through my jaw.  (Doc said I was feeling the nerve.)

Now, here was the weird part... he grabbed this thing that looked like a long narrow chisel (yes, a chisel) put it in my mouth and began to push on my teeth like a wedge.  I could hear a slightly creaking sound in my head, guesting it was tooth pulling away from the root of my mouth.  Then he grabbed something that looked like a pair of pliers.  He grabbed the tooth and twisted the pliers around like he was tightening a bit of plumbing.  I felt like I was some kind of construction project.

Anyway, there was a tearing sound, and he pulled out one tooth, and then the other.  I got to look at them, and neatly enough, they looked just like you see on TV, whitish square thing with four prongs on the end.

So, it's now Sunday, my jaw has a dull ache, and i think it'll be a bit before I'm back on solid foods (heck, even bread hurts a little.)  So, I've been filling up on pudding, yogurt, jello, soup and some ice cream.  For the pain, they gave me a generic version of Vicodin.  I said to the nurse, "Hey, that's the same thing House takes!" And we had a discussion about that TV (except I've not been popping them like candy, like House tends to do.)

Hopefully, I'll be back up to speed soon.
