Ok, I'm pretty angry right now. One, because I didn't get to make it with my Great Oscar Plan, meaning 'Letters From Iwo Jima' slipped away. I did actually download it on time, I learned the hard way that it pays to be prepared and start early when undertaking endeavors of the GOP scale. However, since the were no usable subtitles on the whole freaking net at the time (and there probably still aren't) and, no, I am not in fact a fluent Japanese speaker, I wasn't able to actually watch it. Which pretty much brought down the whole Best Movie, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for me, and there are damn important categories. Well, I know it's not actually my fault and I realize that in this case good intentions probably win over unfavorable circumstances so the Plan could still be considered a win, but the bitter taste remains.
Back to the point now. There happen to be more reasons to my current wrath. Two, Saturday evening, the Web suddenly just bailed out on me. And naturally my Internet access provider doesn't give a flying fuck about anything till the weekend is over so I only got it fixed today. Granted, two webless days are no tragedy, but the timing couldn't possibly be more cruel. I won't whine that I wasn't able to post my reviews before the Oscar night. I probably wouldn't anyway. I am however going to whine that I wasn't able to post my pre-Oscar report. And that's bloody tradition. Which I was robbed of this year. God, I'm pissed.
Now, about the actual Oscars. I don't have much against the results this year. Sure, it certainly wasn't a year of plenty, but, within the given nominee shortlists, every choice more or less made sense. There surely was no 'Oh, no, you fuckers. You didn't' rage. I might have picked differently in a few places if I were give a say in the matter, with, for example an Oscar for Adriana Barraza instead of Jennifer Hudson, for 'Poseidon' rather that 'Pirates' in the Visual Effects category or no Best Movie for 'The Departed' because as much as I loved that movie, I refuse to give an honor of this magnitude to a motion picture that is basically a kinda slicker rehash of another one. Anyway, all the movies recognized yesterday with an Oscar are surely very good pieces of moviemaking (perhaps not always the ultimate best in the category, but close) and deserve some appreciation. On the whole, not a bad night. And Ellen DeGeneres did good. I might not have been blown away, but she was very much ok.
