...is a joy! No matter how challenging it may be. :-) How come so few people vid her? She’s one of the most amazing characters of all time. It’s been a long time since my own video surprised me so much. They all tend to - to a certain extent because I don’t plan everything on paper beforehand and there’s a spontaneous flow during the process for me that brings unexpected results… but this Deb video that I can’t post yet because it’s going to be on Premiers show at Vidukon this year really turned out to be something entirely different than I originally envisioned. And I like that. I like that Deb made me forget all about linear storytelling and jump into pure feelings like she does on the show so often. I like that I had to jump back and forth between different expressions of her nature (which seems like an endless ocean to me and always reminds me of pilots) with such density in three and a half mins that it made my head reel and my heart bloom)). This is the weirdest character study I’ve even done because it has no rules and no structure that I could define without breaking the logical part of my brain))).
Something else I notice is that I’m back to clear cutting in my vidding. More of it than before anyway. Maybe it’s the after effects of studying editing more over the last year or maybe it’s a reflection of my mood and tendency towards minimalism these days. Today I honestly feel there’s nothing better than clear simple cuts and looking for a flow between different shots when you use inner movement in the shots when weaving them together. The movement may be obvious or less obvious… when the only motion is a fluttering of somebody’s eyelashes and a barely visible change in facial expression (oh so powerful!). Doing it without using sophisticated effects is really nice. Also, if I use dissolving then I want it to be consistent… in appearing at least twice throughout a vid. It’s a lot like dreaming: patterns tend to repeat themselves, in slightly different form or context but they have an evolution of some sort, and sometimes resolution too… and pattern is always two… or three similar elements that go together.
Tell me what you guys enjoy in vidding a character you like? And what is it that you’re looking for in a character study? A story of their life? An exploration of some character traits that you love, traits you identify with? New insights? Or something else?
