Last night, I caved and bought a new umbrella. It broke like five minutes out.

I walked back into the store, carrying it.

"I have a complaint."

I shifted it in my hands, intending to demonstrate the fact that it had jammed. The top fell clean off.

My point was gloriously illustrated.

Why must I choose oh god uh. *grabs the first to spring to mind*

I have long had a weakness for female characters who are badass, and an even bigger weakness for female characters who are not ridiculously sexualized. Ammy is the first in spades, and evades the latter by virtue of being a big adorable dog all the time. I kind of like the fact that despite the lack of overt sexy she's apparently gotten around enough to have twelve kids. Unless the "mother of us all" speech the constellations do is figurative. Or hell, this is Japanese mythology, for all we know she created the brush gods by pissing in the river (this has precedent. There is a wind kami brought into being via god fart out there).

I love playing as her, from the amazing speed that makes crossing big effing land maps a snap (and a snap with flowers for that extra dose of cool), to the smooth, ultra-gorgeous battle moves, and that brush screen! I love not fiddling around with menus and shit in a hurry - if you need time to make strokes, you've got it! This is turning into more about the game than Amaterasu herself, but that easy handling is a part of it!

Despite the non-talking aspect, she's hilariously/awesomely/heartbreakingly expressive. The sidequests are what makes it, though. She's an elite badass legendary warrior, sure, but she's got her soft side. She nurtures life and makes plants grow and puts up with embarrassing nicknames and feeds hungry cats and helps old ladies do the laundry like a boss. I like that duality about her - she's saving the world by cracking evil in the face with flaming mirrors, but she's also slowly bringing back belief in the gods on an everyday sort of scale, and both aspects are damn rewarding. Most heroes just clear out the monsters and keep on going, maybe engage in some errand-running which also consists of clearing out monsters half the time, but Ammy's thorough. She will kill the horrific beast terrorizing the town. She will revive your local sacred tree. She will go around and clear out all the evil gates left behind. She will revive every last patch of tainted grass to its former glory. She will feed your cows. She will find your lost teacup. She will fix your mill wheel. She will fix your lightning machine. She will make you a snowman. It's pretty cool, a super powerful being who goes that extra mile.
