There are five things you can count on when it comes to House.

One. If there’s trouble in the hospital, it’s got something to do with him. Greg may be the one who causes it, or the one who fixes it, or the one who profits from it, but he’s always involved somehow. It takes you a while to figure it out, but you eventually realize that this isn’t because House is somehow omnipresent in the hospital, it’s because he’s all you think about. He’s your point of reference when it comes to anything in at PPTH. Did House do this? Can House fix this? …Is House making money off this?. You’re not sure what this means, so you leave it alone for now, and concentrate on ridding PPTH of the latest bugger who’s decided to take legal action against your doctors.

Two. If there’s clinic duty that needs to be done, you’re going to have a hard time finding him. You’ve got a nicely labeled map in the top drawer of your desk specifically for House-hunting. Over the last few years, you’ve made a nice pattern of red X’s of House’s hiding spots. Today it’s the linens room on the first floor, adult surgery ward. He must really need to get out of clinic duty this time; he hates Morgenstein and the other surgeons in that ward. You cross it off your map with a blue marker after the nurse confirms he’s in there. You’ll pretend you didn’t find him today; he’ll use the same room next week if he thinks it’s safe anyways. As you put a nice circle around the X, you’re wondering if you’re marking his hiding spots on your heart as well. You don’t admit this to yourself, of course.

Three. If it’s the opening day of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Ocean's 13, the release date of the PSP, Nintendo DS light, Playstation three, or Nintendo wii, House is going to call in sick. You find yourself keeping up with technological advances in the realm of gaming or checking the movie guide in the paper every once in a while, just to make sure you’ll know that he’s not really ill. There was this one time that he called in sick and you couldn’t find anything new coming out that day- you were so worried, you doubled your yelling efforts the next day and gave him extra clinic duty for the next 2 weeks. He looked at you funny but didn’t ask why. Later you find out that a local adult video store was closing down and having a clearance sale.

Four. If it’s one of those days- you know, the ones where patients who weren’t supposed to, die and your best doctors are getting sued for saving people by Jehovah’s witnesses and it’s raining- if it’s one of those days, House’ll show up at your office before 3, and ask a question for which he already knows the answer. Then he’ll let you take the conversation elsewhere and make you forget about the chaos for a while. Sometimes you get angry at him, frustrated at his decisions-but you never fail to appreciate him on days like these.

Five. If you’ve just found out that you’re not pregnant again, and the world feels like it’s crashing down because you really, really wanted a baby and it’s never going to happen and you’re not getting any younger and it isn’t fair- he’s there. He doesn’t actually say anything, but he looks at you and delays all of his outrageous requests for a few hours. This quiet understanding, and that he doesn’t try to feed you any meaningless condolences and justifications and hopes, means more to you than anything else. You can count on this more than anything.
