Shrinking Pains

On Friday, my company announced the shedding of 4000 jobs worldwide.  While not as dramatic as the complete closure of that red shaded computer store, it's still bigger than a breadbox, baby.  While I'm in a position that is relatively safe from the threat of layoff, it still stinks on ice.

This week I spent time trying to adjust to the realities of smaller staffs.  My week's been full of trying to get employees to take on additional responsibilities, trying to figure out what isn't getting done anymore and reassigning tasks, working 14-15 hour days, listening to customers complain about waiting around for service, while employees complain about having to do more work, and then...  The CEO comes in and wants a presentation and feedback on how we are reengineering the company.

I know that the extreme actions being taken have valid survival intinct reasons.  Its just hard to take.  I am very fortunate not to be in the situation of not having a job at all, but the job now has turned monstrous.  We need a turnaround soon.  A coworker of mine said to me "If I work another 14 hour day this week, I might end up in divorce court."  Heh.  I smiled at him and said, "Don't emulate me."

I don't mean to whine, really.  I just haven't posted in for
