Character Name: William "Billy" Coen (former U.S.M.C. 2nd Lieutenant)

Series: Resident Evil 0 and Umbrella Chronicles

Gender: Male

Age: 28

Species: Human

Sexuality: Straight.

Appearance:
Certainly intimidating to any who don't know him, Billy has the hardened athletic body of a former Marine with the veneer of a hardened criminal for that little extra scary "oomph". He stands about 6' even and he's built like the proverbial brick shithouse, obviously muscular. His brown hair is usually kept longish, unkempt, and slicked back with something of an oily look to it. Though not unhandsome, his features are sharp and his face usually appears scowling despite bright blue eyes. He dresses simply, usually in nothing more complicated than jeans and a T-shirt. The most striking thing about his appearance, though, is a massive tribal tattoo across his right arm that reads "MOTHER LOVE". Why yes, he is a Queen fan.

Personality:
Billy is quite the introvert, a man of few words who doesn't bother sugarcoating the ones he does use. He's cynical, blunt, initially untrusting of everyone and seems permanently stuck in "survival mode". He comes off as teasing, sarcastic and condescending to people who don't know him very well, and doesn't seem to particularly care if he does. He's definitely a loner unless he sees an advantage in teaming up with somebody, and even if he does expect him to be completely businesslike about it. Even so, he's a man of his word and his convictions and Billy will instantly risk his life for the sake of a friend or ally, whether or not they would do the same for him.

It's easy to assume he wasn't always like this, though, since he usually wavers in between all-out pragmatic self-preservation and shades of a protective and compassionate nature. Once you break through his tough exterior, he's a generally nice guy with extreme dedication to his ideals of brotherhood and duty. Yes indeed, this convicted murderer is just a big ol' Boy Scout when you get right down to it. Billy's a simple man at heart, fond of guns, steak, good beer and classic rock and roll. He feels best when protecting the weak or helpless and standing up for what he believes to be right. Betray him once, even in the slightest, and you'll never get another chance to do so. Due to his military training and his skill with firearms and athletics, he's very confident, calm and collected in even the most dire of situations and rarely panics or shows fear.

Abilities:
Given his Marine training, Billy is a physical powerhouse possessing great strength and athleticism. He is surprisingly agile for such a big guy and he's capable of pulling off some astounding feats of strength in a pinch. Given his size, he can take quite a bit of punishment before he's down for the count.

Also given his training, Billy is an expert in many types of firearms and has put together quite a collection over his years on the lam. He carries a 9mm handgun (Colt M1911), a pump-action shotgun (Mossberg M500A "Persuader") and a .44 magnum (Taurus Raging Bull), along with plenty of ammo (and petnames) for each. He's no slouch with a knife either-- he did just get out of prison, you know. So basically, underestimating him in a fight is a very bad idea.

Don't tell anyone, but he's very good at playing the piano.

Weaknesses:
Thanks to recent circumstances, Billy has developed some paranoia and trust issues that make it difficult for him to form anything more than a temporary alliance with anybody. He hates liars with a passion and won't hesitate to bolt if he gets the feeling he's about to be stabbed in the back. Even innocent or unintentional slights by somebody he's counting on will piss him off. He has zero patience for people who risk or use the lives of others in any respect, and any perceived instances of this will have him turning on you in a second. He also has an aversion to being touched by anyone unless he fully trusts them.

Though he does have the skillz that killz, over-confidence makes it very easy for him to get into trouble way over his head, in the manner of one-man vs several dozen enemy showdowns. Here's hoping he never runs guns blazing into a crab nest.

On the flip side, let's face it-- Billy is a bit scary-looking and gives off untrustworthy if not downright criminal vibes. His gruff behavior easily puts some people off, and the tattoo on his arm doesn't exactly make one feel comfortable around him.

Manhattanite or outsider?
Manhattanite. Billy was hiding out in Manhattan at the time of the attack.

History:
Little is known about Billy Coen before he joined the US Marines out of high school. He was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to a squadron given orders to intervene in an African civil war. Intelligence had found reports of a guerrilla base in the jungles of the Congo, and Billy's squad was to find and destroy it. The mission was a disaster from a get-go-- the helicopter missed the dropoff point by well over a mile, and many men succumbed to the heat or the guerrilla soldiers during the long march through deep and treacherous jungle. Billy and only three of his comrades finally made it to the target only to find that a further intelligence screw-up had led them to an innocent village rather than a rebel hideout. Furious and desperate to blow off some steam, Billy's captain ordered the men to round up the villagers and execute them anyway. Though Billy attempted to intervene, he was knocked out by one of his squadmates and his memory of events is rather sketchy.

When the Marines returned to civilization and the truth came out, the incident rocked the military and made national headlines. Somehow only one of the four Marines wound up taking the blame for the whole thing, despite his pleas of innocence and the heavy stench of conspiracy. In the end Lt. Billy Coen was charged on 23 counts of first degree murder, court martialed, convicted and sentenced to death. He spent a year in military prison along with a brief stay in a mental institution. Finally in late July, he was loaded into a MP van for transport to Regarthon Base nearby Raccoon City for his execution.

Hours remained before he was up for the needle. "Luckily" for Billy, as the van passed through the Arklay Mountains in the outskirts of Raccoon City, it was suddenly attacked by an opera-singing madman in an ornate robe and his army of leeches (yes, really). The van crashed, the MP escorts were killed and Billy would have joined them had one of his handcuffs not come loose in the crash. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, he didn't waste any time in escaping and running for his life.

Deep in the forest he found the ruins of a broken-down train crawling with bizarre leech creatures and the walking corpses of freshly dead passengers. He climbed aboard and planned to dig through the dead passengers' luggage for supplies before hitting the road, but his plans for a quick escape were thwarted with the arrival of S.T.A.R.S. Officer Rebecca Chambers. Suddenly, the train began to move and the two were trapped on board together. Though Rebecca tried (poorly) to arrest him, Billy proposed an uneasy alliance until they could escape from the immediate danger. Eventually the train stopped off at a training facility for the Umbrella Corporation that had predictably, also been infected by the T-virus. Billy and Rebecca traversed the grounds, encountering all sorts of horrifying mutant experiments and the zombified remains of the training center's employees. Along the way, the two learned to trust one another and grew close as partners, finally escaping the nightmare and a gigantic mutant leech queen near dawn. As they parted ways, Rebecca took Billy's dog tags for a memento and promised to report him dead in order to shake the heat off of him. Billy thanked her and disappeared off into the woods.

Billy hasn't been seen or heard from since the Train Incident, and there is an official report written by Rebecca Chambers that claims she found his dead and disfigured body in the remains of the MP van that night in the woods. However, evidence has come about that perhaps Billy was not bound for the execution after all, but was in fact secretly on his way to Umbrella custody to serve as an experiment or an unwilling soldier. In either case, there are parties not exactly convinced of Billy Coen's death and he has been on the run for the last several years, moving from place to place, adopting fake names and never going anywhere he won't blend in or remain hidden. Weeks ago he arrived in Manhattan and had been living in Central Park, luckily escaping just in time to avoid the arrival of Big Mommy and her spawn. Now trapped, he lurks through the remains of Manhattan, more determined ever to keep on living...

The Honorable Sir Billiam "Thunderous Israelite" Coen the Third.
