FUTURISTA!

Oct 26, 2005 14:20

for our history class, we had to create avant-garde performances depicting an assigned movement in design history.
we were futurists. yesterday was the big day. 70+ people attended... my classmates, senior block, grad students,
fundamentals students, teachers, people who just happened to wander in... it was amazing.
we started by having everyone sit on the ground in the dark. for a minute and thirty seconds, we projected old black
and white footage of people fishing. very slow, calm, serene, tranquil... and when everyone began to feel settled
and slightly confused, I screamed from within the audience...
"NOOOOOOOOISE!!!!!!"
and blowhorns sounded while two others and I stomped onto stage to begin our performance.
from there, the video changes to quick clips of mussolini, locomotives, destruction, torpedos, explosions, protests,
death... basically utter hatred and chaos. the whole while I scream this:

Who can stand all of this SILENCE?!
Death is the standstill of our past.
Are we alive?... ALIVE filled with HATRED and SPEED!
Our words are not restrained,
they EXPLODE like grenades, shrapnel to the weak,
a derailed locomotive, a radical's control to be FREE!
Our words in freedom, like FIRE demolishing all forms of imitation,
museums and libraries, like prisons, will choke in our soot!
We will shatter the mentality of your anachronistic society,
leaving only REMNANTS of its saddening charade.
A new movement is rising, like hard, cold steel piercing the heavens,
FUTURISTA!
We are through with thy burdening of the past!
LET THE WORMS REVEL IN OUR SPOIL!!!!

... my fellow futurists angrily tossed hundreds of small flyers at the audience the entire time I recited this.
And when we were through, I walked to the back wall and ripped down the 6x9 foot poster that the film had been
projected on, ripped it into shreds, and tossed it at the audience. Then we all stomped out and I slammed the door
behind us. I'm pretty sure we scared the shit out of them. And I'm also pretty sure that a lot of them think that
I'm absolutely nuts now. I dont think any of them would have ever imagined me screaming like that. especially
since I used to be such a shy girl.
dude, I screamed so loud and hard yesterday, that I thought I would vomit when I stormed out. I am SO proud of
myself. a couple of years ago, I would have never dreamed that I had the capability to perform in front
of such a large audience without turning bright red and freaking out. I have come a loooooooong way since then.

I wish you guys could have been there!!!
