Summary: They were best friends and they parted. They were friends and they were together. They met and they fell in love.
(01) (02) It was nearly dawn when he woke up. He drew the curtain back and took a brief look. It seemed that it had just stopped raining since everything was still dripping wet. There was a trace of light hidden among the eastern clouds, struggling to free itself into the morning.
He shifted into a sitting position and kept his glance outside the window. How much time had passed, he had no idea. He did not plan to find out; he was satisfied as he was now. He just sat there, watching the stream of light revealing, clouding the previous darkness in his view.
Few minutes passed before he heard a knock on the door. Twice, a pause, then three times. Sighing of being disturbed, he got up and unlocked the door.
"Hey." It was Kyuhyun.
"Hey." He grinned back. "It's six in the morning."
"So what? Unchain the door and let me in, will you, hyung?"
Laughing, Hyukjae closed the door, unchained it, and opened it wide, letting Kyuhyun head straight to his bed. "What is it? Cannot sleep with your roommate?"
"He's studying."
Hyukjae raised an eyebrow. "At six in the morning?"
"No idea, just a thick medical book. It's scary, you know," replied Kyuhyun, looking around the room and finally deciding that he liked Hyukjae's pillow --and Hyukjae's bed in this case. He laid on his back on the mattress while Hyukjae opened the window and followed him.
They were in silence for a while.
"Kyuhyun-ah?"
"Hmm?"
"Let's go to the aquarium this Sunday."
"No."
Hyukjae blinked, registering the answer in his mind. "What?" He got up, shaking Kyuhyun's shoulders furiously while Kyuhyun was just staring at him with Are You an Idiot look. "Why? You don't like fish?" He frowned. "Let's go to the museum then."
"Hyung, are you that stupid," Kyuhyun sighed rather dramatically. "You are going to the aquarium with Sungmin-hyung, am I right or am I right?"
"Yes, what's wrong with that?"
"Then, you are asking me to go with you to the aquarium."
Hyukjae's face was blank. Kyuhyun frowned. "So? What's wrong? We can go together."
"Three of us can go together you say."
Hyukjae nodded. "We study together, we play games together, and we often go shopping together. It isn't strange, Kyuhyun-ah, any problem with that?"
For a second, Hyukjae thought he saw a glint in Kyuhyun's eyes. Then, again, an Of Course You Are an Idiot. He took a long breath. "Okay, Kyuhyun-ah, let me get this straight. We've spent much time together, the three of us, and somehow, this weekend you don't want to join us for the aquarium, even though you are not busy and you are a smartass that you don't need to study and I believe you've done all your homework and you have all Saturday by yourself so you can play Starcraft for twenty-four hours straight, and still, you don't want to join us on a single Sunday afternoon?"
"Yes."
"B-but, why?"
"I don't want to disturb you and Sungmin-hyung even more."
Hyukjae frowned back. "You don't disturb us; I'm happy with you being here!"
"Yeah, you are happy, hyung," Kyuhyun sighed. "But what about Sungmin-hyung?"
Hyukjae blinked. "I'm sure he's fine," he replied, indifferent.
"Have you ever asked him like... what does he think, hyung?"
"Well, no," admitted Hyukjae, avoiding Kyuhyun's eyes on him. "But I'm sure he doesn't mind." Yes, Sungmin wouldn't mind him spending time with Kyuhyun, right? It wasn't like he loved Kyuhyun in a way he loved Sungmin; it was different. They were best friends and they parted in the past, and somehow they met again. Of course he wanted to spend every single possible time with Kyuhyun; Hyukjae was sure Sungmin knew all this.
"You never asked," accused Kyuhyun, rolling to the other side and bumping into the wall in the end. He flinched then shifted into sitting position, taking Hyukjae's pillow in the process.
"I know him." Hyukjae gritted his teeth. "I'm sure he doesn't mind."
"How about I left you two for a week so you can talk about this in my absence?" Kyuhyun suggested, grinning at Hyukjae's another blank expression. "I'm sure you two need to talk. A lot. About everything that is related to my presence here."
"Kyuhyun-ah!"
"You know hyung," Kyuhyun jumped out of the bed and headed straight to the door. "Sometimes you need to listen to both your best friend and your boyfriend." He opened the door and left, leaving a rather dumbfounded Hyukjae.
_____
Two hours and twenty minutes later, Hyukjae arrived in the class with no Kyuhyun in sight. He sure keeps his words, he thought as he took a seat beside Sungmin who smiled at him.
(Sometimes he wondered if he'd ever seen Sungmin not smiling.)
Hyukjae glanced at his watch every five minutes; Kyuhyun did not come into the class. Leaving him with Sungmin together did not mean he could skip classes, Hyukjae thought --that was, until he realized Kyuhyun did not take this class. That smartass.
Studying in the library felt different without Kyuhyun. It did not feel quieter, neither did it feel empty. Somehow, it was just different.
Hyukjae was able to focus on his Chemistry homework without having to glance at Kyuhyun's answers at every four minutes. He knew he should not be worried; it was Kyuhyun's suggestion afterall. Kyuhyun would be able to take care of himself.
He did not tell Sungmin about Kyuhyun's barging into his room that morning. He did not tell Sungin about Kyuhyun's suggestion that they should talk about it either. Although, deep inside, a part of Hyukjae wished Sungmin would ask about it. About him. About Kyuhyun's absence. About everything. It was not a secret he was keeping anyway.
Sungmin never asked.
Three days had passed. Kyuhyun, of course being a nerd he was, still attended the classes --except that he always sat in the first row which both Hyukjae and Sungmin avoided (hence there was never a chance for them to talk to Kyuhyun). And he left just after the bell rang without trace, as if avoiding them. When he saw them, he would smile or nod in acknowledgement, then focused back on task on hand.
In one sentence: yes, Kyuhyun avoided him.
_____
Hyukjae arrived five minutes early only to find that Sungmin was already there. He took a seat at the opposite and ordered coffee; only then he realized that Sungmin's expression was unreadable.
"Where's Kyuhyun?" was the first thing Sungmin said.
"He does not want to join us," he replied. Somehow he felt bad; Sungmin did only care when he's gone, or perhaps it was just a formality. Heck he had no idea. And why was he coming up with assumptions? Perhaps Sungmin was sincere, perhaps Sungmin was curious--
"Oh." Sungmin blinked. There was a pregnant pause until he leaned forward and reached for his hand. "Hyuk-ah," he started, "I think we need to get this straight."
"Just about time." Hyukjae shrugged. A waiter stopped by their table, placed a cup of coffee on the table while glancing at their hands in a weird way, then left.
"I don't hate Kyuhyun," Sungmin said softly, "but I don't like him either. To be frank, I feel weird around him... He's close to you and I know you've been friends for years, so I don't want to like... disrupt your friendship that way."
"You don't know how to act around him, is it?" Hyukjae's brain started to swirl around.
Sungmin shook his head. "I don't know how to act to him."
"I mean... why?"
"I have no idea. I need time, Hyukjae. I need time, and perhaps you can tell him that he doesn't need to avoid us anymore. It makes me feel bad."
It makes me feel bad too, Hyukjae thought.
That night, Hyukjae did the craziest thing he could ever think of. He went into Kyuhyun's room (sure, that boy was playing Starcraft), pulled him outside and told him his idea.
"I think you two should spend some time together," he said.
Kyuhyun scowled as if he had gone mad. "Excuse me, hyung? You failed my game only to say this?"
"I'm serious, Kyuhyun-ah," replied Hyukjae. "Then you won't be weird with each other, and everything won't go back as it was!"
