Just FYI: Vibrato is MUCH easier if you make sure you're holding the violin correctly. Your left arm shouldn't be bearing any weight; that should all be done by your neck/chin/shoulder.

See, that was actually one of the reasons I was looking into it in the first place even though it's really not something that someone at my current skill level should be worrying about yet. I figured that at least figuring out how to make vibrato work would help to enforce proper hand positioning (and would show me if my current hand positioning was wrong because I'd be unable to do it).

Right now my left arm doesn't bear any weight, but the problem seems to be that I haven't figured out how to make in-and-out rather than up-and-down motions with my wrist. This is probably just a matter of practice but advice would be appreciated of course.

don't think about vibrato now. If your teacher is teaching it to you already, find another teacher.

how's it going by the way? with the violin? I miss mine!

The girl I am learning from would surely have reacted to this the exact same way that you did. Don't worry, I'm not really "thinking about it" I was just trying it out because I was curious.

I didn't end up practicing at all over Christmas, much to my dismay. And my teacher is away for the holidays. Le sigh!

Although when I was feeling depressed and lonely last night, taking out the violin to practice it for an hour really seemed to pick up my mood. I was so glad for that.

Also, as I mentioned to amyura above (in this comment), I figured that trying it out might help tell me if my hand positioning was right or not.

Just remember, proper hand positioning is more important than being good at the instrument.

So true. You can't play at all if your wrists stop working!

Yup. As far as I know, there is no such thing as slide violin.
