As a straight person who finds himself utterly baffled by the New York State supreme court's decision that gays should not be allowed to marry, I have to wonder: Am I missing something? Is there some evil secret about married gay people that I'm just not in on?

What exactly are these people so afraid of??

Silly moon. Don't know that gay marriage killed the dinosaurs? And caused global warming?

Seriously though it really really baffles me. I have heard some arguments about how allowing gay marriage would open the door for legalizying bigamy and polygamy (which I'm not espeically keen on but hey if everyone a consenting adult, go for it) and of course people marrying animals, ten year olds, their shoes (which is a real slippery slope there and strikes me that a lot of wignuts assume being gay means you are a pedophile or into bestiality. Again I think you can make a law that allows gay marriage and still disallows marriage to minors, and other things that are unable to give their consent (animals and inanimate objects.)

On annother level I wonder if people are scared becuase gay marriage is one other way that GLBT folk can prove that they are pretty much exactly like heterosexual people. I watched a documentary about how biased Fox news and one point was made about how they used to love to cover gay rights parade and show the people who were dressed in S and M getup and stuff like that to be like "hahaha, those gay people are so weird."

now that more gay people want to marry and having children and more often then and many of them lead fairly conventional lives it's scary for fundies and wingnuts to realize that gay people are not the "other." They don't want homosexuality to be something accepted in the mainstream. It's too scary.

It kind of makes you wonder how long we can really survive as a country when we try to ban everything that is not just like us.

But then, I guess we've been doing that for a while now. How long ago was it that the supreme court decided that Irish and Armenians were officially considered black?
