According to the reader comments on the BBC website, the reason you can't take books and newspapers is because they can easily be soaked in flammable materials which are highly combustible, even when dry.
And all books have built-in cigarette lighters, obviously.
Surely if you were on a suicide mission you could just soak yourself and your clothes in the same flammable materials?
