The Hounds of the Morrigan - Pat O'Shea
Piratica II - Tanith Lee
Stormbreaker - Anthony Horowitz
Recent books that I have read a significant portion of and not finished include Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz, which was a great disappointment. It seemed to suffer from a severe case of translation-ese, and it wasn't just an attempt to preserve the cultural specificities of the original: it had really odd bits, like a character with a dislocated shoulder remarking (in direct speech), "My pain's severe." Which isn't even all that easy to say. I have also not finished Money by Martin Amis, because
lovelyoliver does it just as well in a much more condensed form.
