I'm not sure you can take up too much of my time if I ask you to post it ;)

It sounds like Mr Orr has some sort of agenda in what he's writing, or that he suggested doing something and it wasn't done.
Just from his letter, he sounds like he was standing at Writers Week drumming up support for his point of view, stirring trouble, rather than accepting that his request, whatever it was, was ignored.

But that's just complete speculation. The guy doesn't sound like he's very balanced to me.

It's one thing to have a point of view, and to offer constructive criticism, it's another to just tear into something that a lot of people have obviously put a lot of effort into.

I can just imagine how it would feel to read that article as one of the overseas writers. What a slap in the face that would be for their time and effort in coming to Adelaide for the event.

Just about any event could be improved, and I think it's great to suggest things that could be improved. I'd expect a writer to be able to put their thoughts into words more eloquently.

You did well to respond, Claire. You did well.

Sorry if this seems rambel-y or doesn't make that much sense, it was written in bits as I had time to write the next line between doing work...

Oh, and you don't sound bitter IMHO.

No, that made sense and thanks for taking the time to read it all, appreciate it :)

As I said to Kim's post above, I don't want anything changed so I should just sit back and be happy about that fact, it's just a pity others don't see it that way and want it to be yet another battle ground.

No, you shouldn't. You should defend an event that you think is good as it is. Event organizers hardly ever hear that people appreciated things how they are; feedback is usually only 'you should do this, and this etc.'

Which is exactly what you did. If anyone who was involved in organizing the event reads your response, they will remember that someone appreciated it 100 times longer than all the criticism. It's letters like yours that keep them organizing these events.

You did exactly the right thing by sticking up it. :)

Thanks. I actually am a little biased because two of the event organisers are uni lecturers and I have let them know my view ;)
