Amazing how people don't get the difference between critiquing the writing and critiquing the author.
(I've been known to do both, but you know what I mean.)
I find it especially jarring as I deal with authors every day who want me to point out things like bad characterization. Of course, many of them are romance novelists....
I... It just baffles me, some of the things the writers AND readers think is perfectly FINE for these characters.
I want to tell them to get out of my fandom and... Well, I was going to say, 'go read romance novels', but that might not work. AHA. They should go read Laurell K Hamilton. And watch soap operas.
I think they should read Dan Brown or whoever it is who wrote the DaVinci Code. Books in which the characters are essentially superfluous and interchangeable. Write fic about that - you can't possibly mischaracterize characters who haven't been established in the first place.
I must admit that I've grown rather fond of editing romances ... they are a light, fluffy read and a nice break from dense prose!
*chuckles* I don't hate romance novels. I just.. There's a set formula, you know what the end will be (true love!), and you know that there will be bumps along the way, etc.
But... I, er, don't like that in my fic. I think that's why I lean towards, "they have sex a lot and snark and mock each other"
I don't know. I think I'm too tired for psychoanalysis.
