Haven season 3, catching up

Dec 10, 2012 23:01

When I last posted about Haven, I was angry and unimpressed with 3x1. Because I was. Since then, I have made my way up through 3x11. Spoilers, obviously.

I want to be all "it's amazing!" and "I love it!" but I can't. Instead, it's reminding me that it's just another show that's mostly about white dudes, with their one Special Chick. The one that gets into the clubhouse, 'cause she's not like those other bitches.

Yes, I shouldn't have given them any sort of trust after the way they murdered Evi so stupidly, and just to give Duke cheap angst.

I don't have a lot of coherent thoughts about the season as a whole, though I do think it's better written than last? And I was impressed that two actual female secondary characters managed to survive. Like, two episodes. Or was it three? Oh, and someone black managed not to be evil for a whole, like, half an episode!

Quite a record for the writers.

It must be really hard for them to not write about white dudes and their angst. At least, that's how it feels, every time they kill off/destroy the character of and/or turn evil all the women and people of color.

This show has always suffered from One Girl in All The World syndrome, and I was really hoping this season that it would finally reach above itself and stop being so shitty about it. But, no. No, instead it's going to do just what every other fucking show does, and pretend that women live in vaccums surrounded by dudes as the most important people in their lives.

I mean, ffs, in the same episode we get jokes about Claire and Audrey sharing a bra (which, really? Are they even the same cup-size?), they kill Claire off.

And Jordan. Jordan, I've been worried about them turning evil from the beginning. Because that's the way these writers roll, when it comes to women who are in the grey areas. Also, she seems to have a very black and white view of the world? idk.

If we look at the other two 'shades of grey' characters, Vince and Dave? We're very obviously supposed to be sympathetic towards them and think they're lovable, wondrous sorts who are merely withholding evidence for Audrey's own good. Not, y'know, in some plot to screw her over.

I find it so frustrating, because the emotional beats of 3x11 were very nicely done, and I did like the episode. And then it ended like that, and I'm just. I'm so angry, and annoyed for letting myself believe these writers wouldn't fuck over every female character involved. It would have been a billion times more dramatic for the skinwalker to be Nathan, you know.

But, no,must protect the implied pairing/true love forever plot at all costs.

Then again, the whole skinwalker/bolt killer subplot has been pretty fucking stupid from the beginning and rarely makes sense (I mean, logistically, there are times when Tommy couldn't have been the bolt killer, but, y'know, I guess we're handwaving. Also, Claire must be a different person to the one bk stole from the factory there, so.... there's another skin hanging around in a tub, waiting to be used again)

Basically, all of this ruins the happy amusement I've been having with the show since I started watching again, and I'm angry and tired of this shit enough to just give up on bothering with more.

Hey, Haven producers/writers? I was actually going to buy seasons two and three. Now you'd have to fucking pay me to do it. I know my few bucks aren't much of a loss to you, but whatever. At least I can buy something that doesn't demonize women and black people. Elementary or Person of Interest, maybe.
