This was one of the worst--if not the worst--body-swap episode it has ever been my misfortune to watch. Filled with a to of male-gazey, tee-hee-hee women are hot moments, it plays out like some unintelligent fratboy's fantasy rather than an episode of the somewhat tongue-in-cheek fantasy/SF series Eureka used to be.
The women in the episode primarily exist to be sex objects first and their boyfriend's property next. Except for Grace, who is too old, I suppose. Grace, of course, just gets shunted to the side and then into the role of the leaving girlfriend (bye, Grace. I don't expect to see you again. You are, after all a woman and just not as important as the males).
Holly is brought up again as another source of Aaaaaaaaaaaaangst and growing for Fargo. Because that's all women are. Object lessons in life for men.
And, thank you, Eureka writers, for saying that attractive men and women can never be friends without thinking about having sex with each other! It's good to know you're so smart on subjects like that.
I felt like I was watching a bad exploitation film. Allison apparently wears a sexy bra and panties to bed, rather than something practical like a cotton night-gown. Jo is constantly getting naked for any man who waves a hand at her. Because Jo is hot and sexy, yo. Gotta show that off.
They did try for some parity, but naked Zane and half-naked Carter do not make up for the constant "My giiirrrlllffrriiiend" bullshit.
Lest anyone say "But, Allison--" Yes. Allison is a bit jealous, too. And now she has reason to be.
This whole episode was played for laughs, but it wasn't funny in the slightest. It was tired and horrible and embarrassing. It also, um, I am sorry to say, proved that the actors aren't very good at mimicing each other.
You know what made "Out of Their Minds" and "Original Skin" so amazing? The actors of Farscape and Lost Girl pulled off each others' mannerisms, and made it believable. Eureka? Didn't manage that. Instead, I couldn't tell who was supposed to be who half the time, and the other time it was only because I remembered the switch.
I also find it really shitty that excepting Allison, none of the women got to body-swap with each other. It's like the extra nail in the "women just aren't important on this show" coffin.
It also pisses me off that we have a billion Jo/Jack/Zane/Allison conversations, but that really important Henry and Grace conversation? Completely off-screen. And now Grace is gone, never to be seen again. And you can bet we will never see what she does on her own. Unlike Jo, she's just not sexy enough.
Jo, of course, is back to the only plotlines they've ever liked for her: who she's fucking.
So. Good job, show, you're well on your way to alienating me entirely.
I'm glad I stopped buying the dvds.
