Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp as buddy cops? Sign me up. (even more awesome is that, like, Jones and a friend came up with the idea of the show down the pub)
I wasn't sure what I thought of it until I realized that I only had three more episodes, and I should maybe slow down. But I couldn't, because I wanted to know what happened next. Also, well, because I really <3 Rachel and Janet and find them compelling and fascinating to watch (and Gill, too, HOLY GOD, GODZILLA ahem)
The show is a procedural cop drama, but instead of being constantly focused on all the Men In Uniform, this one's about the women. And I think that I like that it isn't easily-flipped, that the show is very... woman-friendly/woman-POV, if that makes sense? It's not something that will appeal to everyone, obviously.
There were a couple of times where lines felt like pure META in response to things like, oh, the statistics on rape convictions (or the double-standards for men and women who have affairs in episode six bit just fucking nailed how stupid they are)
I just. I am reeling by how much six episodes of what felt like "normal cop drama" just made me feel (I spent a tense five minutes in episode six, hating all three of them whilst simultaneously understanding and feeling for all three of them, my GOD). The plots are driven by the women, and the resolutions are by them, and everyone calls Rachel 'Sherlock' WHICH IS HILARIOUS AND I LOVE IT.
I love that it's not all young women, either--that while Rachel is still somewhat of a newbie, Janet and Gill aren't.
And the bonds of friendship. I am so not used to a show where the women are friends and it's part of the fucking mandate and plot-line structure. I'm so used to building friendships from scattered, tiny, minuscule moments and hope.
The show has been renewed for a second series, this time with eight episodes. I am sad that I'll have to wait a year, but I am definitely pleased.
Also, I sort of believe that Gill and Janet had something, once. I can see Rachel and Janet, too. Possibly after getting drunk at the holiday do. (ok, mostly, I just want to see Rachel kissing girls, ok? She needs to avoid men for a while, after the last one)
