So, I went to my first college party tonight. It was a birthday party for a friend I recently met at the Baptist Student Center. We ate at a Japanese place, and other than the orange slices in my shrimp bowl, it was really good. There were over 20 of us there, many of whom were foreign exchange students who are learning English at the college or at the BCM.
I really, really want to get a guide dog now for two reasons. First, I want to be able to just follow someone in a place like this because of how crowded and tight it was. Secondly, after an incident with a bus not pulling up to its designated spot this week, a dog would have been helpful with keeping me in a straight line as I attempted to find my way down the sidewalk.
My next O&M lesson will be two weeks from now, and since my instructor has shown me what I need to know on campus, I really have to work on my route for the home interview. Then, we’ll work more next semester when I need to know how to get to other buildings on campus. Most likely though, my classes will be in one again because I am not in the mood to take anatomy or statistics now with the schedule set up the way it is. Apparently, if I take them in the fall, classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I would prefer that since I tend to go home for the weekends. We shall just have to see though.
I am absolutely loving it here though. I’m finding that I’m not the shy person I thought I was. Yes, I’m still nervous in new situations, but I’m actually making efforts to speak to more people and to interact in their conversations than I did in high school. Today, I spoke to some random person on the bus for a while, and tonight, there were several people at the party I had not met. But I did not feel left out. I felt like I was included in everything which is not usual when I’m in a crowded situation. The only thing I want to check on is my hearing. Supposedly, it’s fine, but since I’ve had a major sinus infection since I’ve been here, I feel a bit off. I want to make sure nothing has changed since the last test since I am having trouble hearing people when I am in a noisy environment.
