HP Lovecraft Historical Society

NaNo, I have almost entirely given up on. I got a lot farther this year than I did last year, but I just keep getting way too sidetracked in the middle of it - happens every year. So alas, Steampunk Star Wars (rewritten so that Anakin is completely written out because I am blasphemous like that) will have to remain the product of my derranged imagination.

Instead, I've renewed my interest in HP Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos and spent most of last night researching. In the process, I have discovered The HP Lovecraft Historical Society which, I must sya, is fantastic. Their adaptation of Call of Cthulhu is totally awesome - they made it as a silent movie, adapting it to the screen in the way it would have been done during the time it was published. I haven't seen many adaptations, but I have to say: the movie's really great so all you Mythos buffs should check it out.

They're doing Whisperer in the Dark next - and since that was published in the 30s, it's gonna be "a talkie" - the trailer's out on youtube and it looks great.

Mostly, I love how awesome and funny they are. The behind the scenes from Cthulhu was highly amusing: it was silent so the actors didn't really have lines: they would say something and then the title card reveals the lines, so they could make up anything. So during the segment where the artist Wilcox is relating his dreams to the professor, he was just making shit up and as the takes wore on, the stories got crazier and crazier. "And now I'm going [to the Dreamlands] - in the middle of the day!  Lunchtime, I'm eating a hot dog and suddenly I'm dreaming!  All I want are Sun Chips and all I see are the black skies of R'lyeh!"

Also, they have a ton of pdf props they created to go along with period stuff: newspaper templates, drivers licenses, diplomas and coursebooks for Miskatonic University, streetcar transfers from Arkham, Mass. - it's really great.

And for anyone wondering: yes, I am planning to use part of the Mythos at Gaslight. Prepare yourself!

mythos, gaslight
